They’d upended the hopes and expectations of the network by electing to play anything but the hits, “Come As You Are” being one exception. Everyone had seen it.” But on its own, Unplugged remains one of rock’s great live albums, as well as a glimpse of Nirvana at their most naked and idiosyncratic. “We’d aired it so often that year it was a shock that the album sold so well. “We used it as a way to mourn Kurt on air,” Coletti says of the show. (The cardigan he wore, still unwashed since the performance, just raised $334,000 at auction, making it the most expensive sweater ever sold.) The live album wouldn’t see release until nearly a year later. It’s impossible at this point to divorce the recording from images of Cobain, from the mythology of the night. But we didn’t know at the time-we moved on.”

“It should all still be sitting there,” Coletti says of the set. “And Tony Bennett the day after that.” Almost immediately after the band had finished, a production crew was tearing the set down, including the black candles and white Stargazer lilies that would later give viewers the feeling that they were watching a living funeral.

“I think the next day, we did Stone Temple Pilots,” series producer Alex Coletti tells Apple Music. Recorded in New York on 18 November 1993, five months before Kurt Cobain’s death, it was the first of three tapings in three days that week for MTV. The performance was released on DVD in 2007.It’s worth remembering and repeating: Unplugged was never meant to be Nirvana’s final statement. It also won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 1996. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and has become the group's most successful posthumous release, having been certified 5x platinum in the United States by 1997. MTV Unplugged in New York was the first Nirvana album released following the death of Kurt Cobain. As opposed to traditional practice on the television series, the band played a set list composed of mainly lesser-known material and cover versions of songs by The Vaselines, David Bowie, Lead Belly, and Meat Puppets, whose Cris and Curt Kirkwood joined Nirvana onstage. The show was directed by Beth McCarthy and first aired on the cable television network MTV on December 16, 1993.

It features an acoustic performance taped at Sony Music Studios in New York City on November 18, 1993, for the television series MTV Unplugged. It's not clear at this point whether the blu-ray will offer the hi-res download or not, but it seems reasonably likely, particularly after the recent Grace Jones experiment.

The single vinyl LP comes with a download card for ‘MP3s' (actually 320 KBPS MP4 AAC) but one advantage of opting for the 2LP 45RPM is that you get an upgraded download of hi-res 96/24 files, although as the sicker notes (see above) the two tracks from Unplugged are CD-quality 44.1kHz/16 bit. The blu-ray is stereo only affair (PCM, DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD) with no surround sound option. Additionally, Nirvana will be issued on hi-res (96kHz/24bit) via a ‘Pure Audio' blu-ray audio release. This isn't being re-released on CD but there will be two vinyl versions a standard 180g LP and a special deluxe 2LP set cut at 45RPM. The 14-track collection is a solid overview and features the last studio recording, You Know You're Right, all the well known singles and two tracks from the MTV Unplugged performance, including David Bowie's The Man Who Sold The World.
